DECEMBERS'S ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Rudl R. Mergelman
I was born and raised in Gunnison, Colorado. My Great Gandparents, on both sides, immigrated to America and homesteaded out west. I received all my schooling in Gunnison including getting an art education degree from Western State College. I taught art and industrial arts at Eagle Valley High School for three years. I taught art at Gunnison High School for three more years.
I moved to Canon City in 1976 and went to work in the art department at Estes Industries for 16 years. I worked several years for a local gift company, Lasting Impressions, doing graphics and product design. In 2005 my wife Darleen and I opened Sagebrush Gallery in downtown Florence. We closed the gallery in 2010. I now have two studios, one in my home and another in the Touch of Grace Antique Store where I also display some of my paintings.
I have always felt fortunate to be able to make a living in art related fields. During my career I have always produced my own artwork and have shown in galleries throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. My preferred subject matter is the contemporary American Cowboy / Western Lifestyle and North American Wildlife. My favorite mediums are oil paint and modeling clay. I paint and sculpt.
I sell original paintings only. I don't do prints.
I don’t have any deep philosophical thoughts concerning my work; it is a simple mixture of my love of the subject matter and expressing that with my art skills. I enjoy all types of art and still love to teach. I don’t put too much stock on talent as I have seen the best results from students who learn to observe, work hard in the studio and take as many ‘lessons’ as possible. The best rewards of my career have been all the incredible people I’ve met while producing, sharing and enjoying art.
If there is interest in purchasing any of my work, please inquire at
